All About egypt
As travel bloggers, we want to be completely transparent and share our honest thoughts with you. We don’t sugarcoat about our travels adventures and want you guys to know both the good and the bad. Of course, everyone has different experiences but we wanted to share our time in Egypt with you, truthfully.
We have a love-hate relationship with Egypt. While the pyramids, temples, and other historical sights were incredible, we found ourselves tired out from the people. That being said, we did encounter some of the nicest people but we found that majority were not welcoming and friendly at all. We were badgered by locals nearly everywhere we went and it was really hard to enjoy all that Egypt has to offer. Due to a deteriorating economy, instability and war in the region, tourism has taken a significant hit in Egypt. Prior to 2010 tourists flocked to see the pyramids and wonders of the world; now the sites are now filled with few Chinese tourists and the occasional Westerner. This has taken a major toll on locals' income.
Locals have become even more aggressive and desperate towards tourists. Everyday we were followed down the street and harassed if we did not want to buy something. In Luxor, we were eating dinner in a café when a driver started yelling at us from outside to get into his horse-drawn carriage. We signaled no – we were clearly eating dinner and not interested in leaving our food and going for ride- and he started screaming obscurities at us. We found that the haggling of prices everyday got too exhausting for us and I am not too sure that I would recommend backpacking Egypt on your own.
Of course it would be a different experience if you went with a tour group or did a cruise down the Nile. If you do not have to interact with locals and just have the tour guide sort everything out for you then it can be an amazing experience. But as we focus our travels around meeting locals and engaging with them, we had a rough experience in Egypt.
We were fortunate enough to meet a few friendly locals who were honest with us and helped us out a lot- including giving us a free ride at 2am from the bus station when we could not find a taxi.
We always try to look at the positive sides when travelling, and when we look back at our time in Egypt, we will focus on all of the great times we had exploring ancient pyramids and temples and learning about the Egyptian culture.
