The Best Airbnb in Joshua Tree
Joshua Tree, a magical place where two deserts meet in Southern California, is full of beautiful rock formations, art, wildlife, and of course- joshua trees! We wanted to experience the desert and its vast wilderness in all its glory on our trip to Southern California, and couldn't believe how beautiful it was. From hiking in the national park, hanging out in the hippie desert towns, and stargazing outside of our cozy Airbnb at night, Joshua Tree is the perfect getaway.
Where to Stay in Joshua Tree?
Once you leave all the cities of Southern California and Palm Springs, you will notice that there aren’t many hotel and lodge accomodations available. This is because the best way to experience Joshua Tree is to stay at a cute Airbnb- and Joshua Tree is full of them!
We couldn't get over how many Insta-worthy bungalows there are- and after a few hours of searching we found the perfect one for us!
The Sunset Road House proved to be the ideal place for our retreat, and it had all of the amenities we were looking for. Not only are you staying in this beautifully decorated bungalow out in the open desert, but you are also surrounded by luxury.
This Airbnb comes with 2 bedrooms rooms and 2 full bathrooms- we could not get enough of the boho glam touches everywhere! Throughout the house, you will see incredible modern art paintings by the owner, Jon Rannells, that will beautifully complete the look of any space. You can purchase them right through here.
There is also a large living space, complete with a fireplace for those chilly desert nights. A lovely touch was the complimentary bottle of bubbles that the hosts left for us, as it was perfect to sip on while stargazing.
Outside the bungalow, you will found acres of clear space that you can explore. There is also a pool you can cool off in after your hikes, hammocks to lounge in, and a really fun ring toss game. At night, you can roast marshmallows at the outdoor firepit next to a hot tub- while the desert heat soured to almost 40 degrees celsius (100 fahrenheit for all our Americans), once the night went down, the temperatures dropped to 15 (60) at night. The hot tub was the perfect place to end your day in.
Our best advice is to stay here for a few days and give yourself time to relax and unwind in the desert. We bought food to cook with in the local town 20 minutes away (it had a full on Walmart there and everything!) and just stayed in and cooked all of our meals. This Airbnb is dog friendly- sooo important- and they even provide your pupper with all the necessities, such as dog toys, bowls, and blankets. This made us super happy and is really convenient just in case you happen to find a dog along on your travel here, haha.

If The Sunset Road House is booked up for your trip, there is also a second property you can book- which is a vintage trailer! This boutique camper, called The Sunset Road Trailer, is newly renovated as of this month and is also a super cute place to stay.
best Things to Do in Joshua Tree
The main attraction in the Joshua Tree area is to visit the Joshua Tree National Park. For a fee of $25 per vehicle, you can spend a day there driving around looking at the amazing landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and the stunning Joshua Trees. One of the main places to see is Skull Rock, a super cool rock formation in the shape of a skull, and cacti lovers can unite at the Cholla Cactus Garden. Two good hikes are the Barker Dam Trail and the Hidden Valley Trail- just don’t forget water as shade is hard to come by.
You can also see stunning scenery outside of the national park, just by driving around. We would stop and get out of the car just to take in the views around us.
Pioneertown, a short detour on the route between Joshua Tree and Palm Springs, is an old town that looks straight out of a Western Movie. It was actually built in the 40s for that purpose to be used as a movie set, and it's been maintained perfectly since. We were honestly expecting to see someone riding horses through the square, and let me tell you, were were not disappointed. It’s a fun place to stop by, and if you’re hungry, definitely check out Pappy + Harriet’s, which serves up classic Western and American food.
